This Wednesday, February 23rd Sotheby’s is proudly presenting a live evening sale auction of some of the most well-known digital artworks in our period. What is being auctioned off is a single lot sale of 104 CryptoPunks acquired simultaneously in a singular transaction on the blockchain by the anonymous collector only known through their moniker 0x650d. This wallet boasts an air-tight provenance and ascribes the group with the most unique value as one of the largest collections of CryptoPunks held by a single artist. This auction offers a motley crew of celebrated punk icons featuring sunglasses, a variety of head accessories, and more that differentiates each NFT and prescribe their unique and curious personalities.
CryptoPunks were launched back in 2017 by Canadian software developers Matt Hall and John Watkinson. Originally, the NFTs had proven popular in the early stages of the crypto community with the early days of Bitcoin and Ethereum.
These emotive icons have become synonymous with the current zeitgeist of the internet and popular culture. Being adorned as the profile avatar of athletes, celebrities, and tech giants alike. This historic sale by Sotheby’s will only add to the influence that the crypto community will hold over future endeavors.
This collection contains 10,000 CryptoPunks, each with its own unique and distinct characteristics. Included are 9 aliens, 24 apes, 88 zombies, 3840 females, and 6039 males. Of going on sale will be 104. The collection is estimated to sell between $20 million and $30 million. Online currently the starting bid is placed at $14 million. It will be interesting to see how this historic sale will progress. I know that I will be watching.
